Owen Cleaners was recognized as the Business of the Year for 2002 at the Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce annual dinner on Thursday, January 17, 2002 at the Executive Inn.  David and Carolyn Perry, co-owners, were both present to accept the award.  Mr. Gene Katterjohn, Jr., former owner of the company, was also present with his wife, Weezie.  Over 500 guests from many area companies attended the dinner.

Other honorees at the dinner included David Denton, Distinguished Citizen of the Year, Tom Clayton, Chamber Volunteer of the Year, and Dr. Barbara Veazey, recipient of the Leadership Award.  The keynote speaker was Nelson Farris, Nike director of corporate training.  He spoke on the importance of ordinary people working together as a committed team to achieve extraordinary results.  He suggested this theme be carried forward by the Paducah Chamber to help achieve its regional goals.

In accepting the Business of the Year Award, Mr. Perry cited the volunteer efforts of the community in supporting the annual Cal’s Coats for Kids drive.  Owen Cleaners and Cal Sisto of NewsChannel 6 have been jointly sponsoring the coat drive for the past 15 years.  Mr. Perry said that over 63,000 coats have been collected, cleaned and given to needy children and their families since the program’s inception.  He also mentioned the excellent response in recent months to Owen Cleaners’ longstanding practice of cleaning American flags for free.

Mr. Perry expressed his appreciation to the Chamber in recognizing Owen Cleaners as business of the year.  He said that Owen Cleaners actively supports the Chamber in its community and regional development efforts.  Owen Cleaners is also a member of the Mayfield Graves County Chamber of Commerce as well as the Kentucky Chamber.  The company supports numerous other civic, charitable and educational organizations.
